So, where's the Cannes Film Festival being held this year?

Would you like to work in the film industry? Would you like to win a film award? Would you like to know where Cannes is?

When a film is completed and screened for public viewing many of the people involved in the production are keen to submit it for the many awards available. Some of these awards are part of an international or national film festival others are offered by organizations who want to recognize achievement in the industry, but they are not confined to one country of continent you will find festivals and awards the world over. Once a film has been entered it is subject to the various criteria specific to each award.

The most popular and famous film awards are the Oscars (Hollywood’s Academy Awards), the awards were first held in 1929. But these are not the only awards given in the world of cinema, there are many others worldwide.

The numerous awards include:

Golden Lion- Venice Film Festival

A winged lion, an iconic symbol of Venice. This festival has been around since 1932, and the awards associated with this event are definitely well-respected.

Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are one of the world’s most famous film award ceremonies and are hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Grand Jury Prize- Sundance Film Festival

Sundance Film Festival, hosted in Utah, is the biggest, independent film festival in the States since 1978.

European Film Awards- Film of the Year

One of the greatest honours, within the movie industry, is to be awarded Film of the Year at the European Film Awards. The first time this trophy award was ever given out was in 1988.

The Golden Bear – The Berlin International Film Festival

The bear figure is used on the trophies as it is an animal associated with the area of Berlin. This festival was created for the Berlin public in 1951.

BAFTA Awards

This ceremony takes place in February, just before the Oscars, the trophies come in the shape of a theatrical mask. This highly respected ceremony has been running since 1952.

Palme d’Or – The Cannes International Film Festival

These gorgeous trophies feature a single golden palm in a wax seal. This timeless design was introduced in 1955, the support beginning redesigned in 1992 and 1997. The festival has been around since 1939.

And of course, the most well known:

The Oscars

This event is watched by millions and is played live in over 200 countries. These are probably the most famous awards in the film industry having been around since 1929.

Each year the latest films aim to win one of the many coveted awards - Best Actor, Best Director Best Picture etc. etc.

I began writing this blog before this year’s Academy Awards which were held this March during which Will Smith shocked the audience by slapping the host comedian Chris Rock for cracking a joke about the actor’s wife; he has now been banned from the awards for 10 years!

After nine decades of Academy Awards ceremonies, the most Oscars won by a film is still 11. That long-held record is shared by three iconic movies: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003), “Titanic” (1997) and “Ben-Hur” (1959).

Imagine working in the film industry, which awards would you like your movies to be entered for?

The Oscar sits on some shelf above my desk. If there was an earthquake, I could actually be killed by my own Academy Award.
